The beauties of Baroque in Naples

 

The tour starts at the small Nilo Square, where we found the beautiful church which preserves a precious monument devoted to the Cardinal Brancaccio and carved by Donatello and Michelozzo, to continue alongside the so called Decumano Maggiore,  by visiting the churches of Purgatorio ad Arco and San Lorenzo Maggiore: from there it is located the beginning of San Gregorio Armeno , the famous street full of shops of Christmas figures in terracotta. The itinerary will end at the Cathedral, by visiting the Treasure of Saint January, San Gennaro in Italian; the Dome, consacrated to the patron of the entire city, is considered an authentic jewel of the Baroque in Neaples.

Perhaps the possibility to visit the Girolamini complex, in front of the Dome.

From Spaccanapoli to the Sansevero Chapel

 

The guided path involves and forsees a series of stops at the most important and significant monuments of the historical centre of Neaples placed along the famous street called “Spaccanapoli”, as we name the Decumano Inferiore belonging to the ancient Neapolis: in fact, now is possible to see also the old structure of the city coming from the Graeco-Roman period, characterized by “cardini” and “decumani”. We will visit the church of Santa Maria la Nova, with its marvellous ceiling roof, the Church of Jesus Christ and finally the great complex of San Domenico Maggiore. The itinierary will end at the  Chapel of San Severo , a masterpiece arranged by the prince Raimondo di Sangro, a mysterious representative of the Neapolitan Enlightenment, alchemist and freemason, where the statue of a veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sammartino is held.

The Castles of Neaples

 

The route starts from Castel dell’Ovo, the first one among the five castles of the city, built on the little island of Megaride, where the Greek founders of Partenope, the old colony, landed. After visiting the complex, with a nice view on the gulf, we will continue through the settlement of Santa Lucia, to reach the Plebiscito Square. Here it will be possible to observe the front face of the RoyalPalace and the church of San Francesco di Paola, the famous Cafe Gambrinus and also the exterior of Theatre of San Carlo. The itinerary will end with the visit of the Maschio Angioino,  a marvellous example of  a castle of the Renaissance, rich chest of art objects and masterpieces.
